How making up your mind can become your strength
Jan 09, 2026
Have you ever noticed the difference in how you show up when you’re confident in how things are going to go versus unsure? Your entire physiology changes.
If you’re confident in your answer, your hand shoots up, you speak up more loudly, you are at ease, or maybe even a little excited, to share with others.
When you’re convicted in the path you’re taking or the product you’re offering, you speak to anyone and everyone about it. There’s an unmistakable positive energy and enthusiasm about you. You attract people and opportunities.
Contrast that with when you’re unsure.
Not sure what the right answer is?
You shrink in your chair thinking ‘I hope no one asks me!’ You don’t make direct eye contact. You make yourself smaller. Your nervous habits might emerge - squirming, tapping your pencil, biting your nails, and other signals of discomfort.
Not sure of your path or product?
You question everything, insist on more data and more time. You hesitate to tell people about it and when you do, you fumble over the words. You feel frozen, not taking action, or worse, spinning like crazy and not getting anywhere. Your energy is frantic, scared or deflated.
Here’s the good news: No one is always sure of themselves.
We are all going to have times when we cycle through different phases of confidence and fear. The goal is to figure out how to get back to a place of focused, confident action more quickly.
When you’ve made up your mind to do something, THAT is where strength comes from. As John Beecher says, “Strength is a matter of a made up mind.”

So how do we get to a made-up mind more quickly?
Getting a coach can be a great way to help you build the muscles you need to make effective decisions and take decisive action.
We sit with your big decisions, looking at them from all angles.
We challenge assumptions, align them to your values and weigh the tradeoffs.
When you’re finished, you know that the decision you’re making is the right one for you, not made purely from fear or other people’s opinions.
Just like lifting weights to build strength, learning to build your own decision making muscles leads to more conviction and better leadership.
